This extremely small site (courtyard patio) presented an amazing opportunity to develop an extremely innovative use of space and function.
The client simply required a spa, and did not wish to obstruct the small space with the mandatory fencing required for Queensland pools. What was created was a spa which of itself creates the compliant fence (its own walls are the fence to the spa), and incorporated a stacked quartz water feature to disguise the necessary steps that provide vertical access to the entry platform of the spa.
The only conventional fencing required was the gate which is cleverly hidden behind the stacked quartz water feature, which operates separately from the spa itself. Glass was used in place of a full height wall for the spa in order to be less obtrusive than simply constructing walls, which then would have overpowered the small usable space allowed.
The spa and water feature therefore in fact become a feature of the back patio, rather than an obtrusive fence, which in turn adds significant value to the dwelling which would not have otherwise been capable of having a pool or spa.
